Due to the spread of the internet, obtaining digital reference material in Japanese from even outside of Japan has become relatively easy. However, there are many issues regarding quality and volume that need to be addressed before resources and information can be deemed suitable for academic research. In particular, the enhancement and distribution of content in Japanese for use in Japanese cultural education and research is a problem.

At the National Institute for Japanese Literature, we are constructing a digital resource center for Japanese literary research resources and information using the internet. Our research puts this at its foundation, making as our goal the extensive creation, through collaboration (using digital collaborative work methods) with researchers overseas, of content suitable for use in researching Japanese literature. In short, we look to jointly create a digital archive and encourage its use. For this research, we will establish bases in Europe and North America, create a collaboration system, and work on the three following research topics.

1. Preparation of internationalized content for Japanese literature
This will focus on construction a directory of researchers, research thesis directory database, and translated works database.

2. Joint construction and use of a Japanese research resource and information archive
This focuses on research into expanding the variety, scope, and function of digital content available from the NIJL and the realization of an internationally accessible archive system mutually manageable through collaboration.

3. Creating and making available a metadata database
This will look to jointly construct a metadata database of resources and information related to Japanese literature held at joint-use university centers for the humanities. We will construct metadata based on internationally accepted standards and work towards experiments using standardized search protocols.
